They got surprised when their hands are touching to each other. They were amazed to see their captain walk on his feet. They are the citizens of Axiom of the animation movie Wall-E. Turning human into robot and robot into human, the movie is an entertaining satire.

Let us start with the heroic robot, Wall-E. Although he had lived long alone in the earth and could not differentiate which is more valuable: a jewel or its box, Wall-E surely knew what is meant by ‘feelings’. He kept a touching 1969 musical movie, ‘Hello, Dolly!’, in his memory because of the hand-holding scene.

The story gets unrealistic when he falls in love with a female robot named Eve. She was so cold at the beginning when she was dispatched on earth by a plane, which later is known from the Axiom. When Eve was shut down automatically after finding a plant seed, Wall-E did everything to bring her back to life.

When the story developed and Wall-E got his wheel feet on board Axiom, the humanity of Eve and Wall-E started to take place. Wall-E strived to help Eve to bring the plant seed she found on earth to the captain of Axiom. Although lots of obstacles were there, the two managed to bring human back to earth.

Getting back to earth, it was Eve’s turn helping Wall-E by replacing his damaged part with the spare-parts kept on earth. So, in the end, the human got back to the earth, and the two robots (maybe) live happily (ever after).

Wall-E has human’s adjectives. He has feelings, he struggles to save Eve when he first on board Axiom, and later he sacrifices himself for the sake of humanity by letting his body crushed by a kind of tube machine. He sacrifices himself for the good of many. His actions trying to bring Eve back to life shows human’s sacrifice to help others they love.

What about the human? They are too lazy that time. They sit on the flying chair, order food and any other stuff from computers. They do not even talk to each other directly. They do it via computer. When Wall-E made John and a girl touched each other, they were surprised to feel something they have not felt before. When Auto, the Axiom’s auto pilot computer, turn the Axiom almost 180 degree, it took John and the girl at the last minute to act saving the babies who were about to fall. Nobody cared about them before.

Look at the captain. After all those years, he did not know the earth. He only knew it when he saw the pictures after Eve showed him the plant seed. Everything he knew at the end of the movie was learned from a computer. The humans have lost contact with the place they (or their ancestors) used to live: the earth. He did not even know he can walk if Auto was not against him. The passengers on board Axiom were as surprised as the captain when they saw him walk his way to stop Auto.

As for us, let us check ourselves, are we Wall-E who have feelings, is willing to sacrifice himself, and puts others before him? Or are we the citizens of Axiom, who know no feelings, no compassion, and even nothing of ourselves?

Here are the words of God (Matthew 22:37-39, KJV):

Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
